Police in Ebonyi State have arrested twenty-six suspects in connection with a fracas by the youths that claimed three lives, including a police officer in Ekoli Edda in Afikpo South Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State, Mr. Chris Anyanwu, stated this while parading some of the arrested suspects at the Command Headquarters in Abakaliki.
He explained that among those arrested for the fracas that erupted on December 26, 2022 were the Chairman of All Progressives Congress (ALC) in the State, Chief Stanley Okoroemegha and the party’s House of Representatives candidate for Afikpo North and South, Chief Eni Uduma.
Though the political stalwarts were not among those paraded, Mr. Anyanwu said discreet investigations into the violence showed that it was caused by lingering supremacy struggle between them.
The PPRO noted that a member of Ebubeagu Security operative attached to the APC Chairman, whose name was given as Nnamdi Omeoha, was also arrested.
Mr. Anyanwu said one AK47 rifle and live ammunition, two pump action rifles and one dane gun, as well as three AK47 magazines were among items recovered from the suspects.
Two of the suspects, Nnamdi Omeoha and Okporie Oti, denied their involvement in the crime.
The Police Command said fourteen of the twenty six arrested suspects would be arraigned as prima facie cases of conspiracy, armed robbery, arson, unlawful possession of firearms, malicious damage and murder had been established against them.
