COMMITMENT TO EXCLUSIVE BREAST FEEDING ADVOCATED AS WORLD BREAST FEEDING WEEK IS CELEBRATED.

worldBreastFeeding2017Every year, the World Breast Feeding Week is marked globally between 1st and 7th of August to promote Exclusive Breast Feeding for the first 6months of a baby’s life.

As the world marks the day,medical experts in the health sector in Enugu Statehave advocated the need for nursing mothers to show commitment to the practice of Exclusive Breastfeeding.

They stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Enugu. The Director Public Health, Ministry of Health, Enugu State, Doctor OkechukwuOssai notes that breast milk contains nutrients that protests babies, enhance growth and development of the child.

Doctor Ossai maintained that breast milk was the most cost effective intervention. But as important as it is, to sustain exclusive breast feeding , do Nursing Mothers really adhere to the practice?

The Co-ordinator Baby Friendly Initiative of the Ministry, Mrs Patience Enewali decries the non-challant attitude and ignorance of some Nursing Mother who find it difficult to sustain exclusive breast feeding based on flimsy excuses.

’ Breastfeeding is the baby’s right.”

 A Pediatrician, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku – Ozalla, Doctor Ada Ayuk encouraged Nursing Mothers with busy schedule to adopt the manual  or electrified method of expressing  breast feeding which could last for eight hours.

Two Nursing Mothers and a Father gave their impressions .

“When you breastfeed your baby it makes him healthy.”

Some mothers who have passed child bearing age stressed the need for support from family members to enable nursing mothers to cope with the practice.

This year’s World Breast Feeding  Week has the theme “Sustaining Breast Feeding Together”.
