CHANGE REFUSE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY — EXPERT TELLS SOLUDO

REPORTER: ONYINYE CHIJIOBI

An environmental expert, Dr. Chinedu Eboh, has called on the Anambra State Government to reconsider its house to house waste collection strategy.

This is for a more effective and efficient refuse disposal process that will help to guarantee good sanitary condition in the area.

Dr. Eboh made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Awka, the state capital.

He argued that the strategy had failed to address the perennial refuse disposal challenge in the state, stressing that heaps of refuse had gradually returned to streets of major cities and their environs.

The environmentalist noted that the unfamiliar nature of the initiative, coupled with the difficulty of waste collectors to reach far neighborhoods during routine drive had rendered the entire process unproductive, hence the need for a revised plan of action.

Dr. Eboh, while explaining that the business of waste management is a cost intensive one which requires proper planning and organisation to achieve the desired goal, suggested the return of receptacles at designated points with special lids to prevent spillage.

According to Dr. Eboh, the target spots should be streets in cities rather than major roads where occupants of houses in the areas are made to take care of the receptacles as well as pay a fixed monthly levy for the service.

He, however, called for the engagement of professionals in waste management, instead of mere contractors, who hardly understand the need for regular refuse disposal.

The environmental expert also called for the sensitization of the public to the correct ways to bag their wastes and drop same at approved locations for collection.
