CAN, ENUGU ASSEMBLY CONDEMN KILLING OF CATHOLIC PRIEST, CALL FOR IMPROVED SECURITY

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Enugu State has joined in the nationwide condemnation of the murder of a Catholic Priest, the Reverend Father Paul Offu.

In a communiqué after the association’s meeting in Enugu, the group decried any act capable of causing violence, civil unrest or the breach of peace in the state.

The statement called on the State Government to urgently review the security architecture in the area by increasing local security personnel, re-orientation of traditional rulers on the need to collaborate with security agencies and encourage the agencies in a manner that would improve security in the state.

It called for proper investigation into the killing of the Reverend Offu to bring the perpetrators of the act to book.

The communiqué commends the State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for his efforts at making the state safe and peaceful, describing the area as the second most secured state in the country after Abuja.

According to the communique, “CAN in Enugu State as a religious group shall not fail to continuously pray for peace and security of the state.”

Similarly, the Enugu State House of Assembly has condemned in its entirety the gruesome murder of the Parish Priest of Saint James The Great Parish, Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local government Area by unknown armed men in Enugu.

A statement by the Speaker of the Assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, described it as the height of insecurity in the country and called on security agencies to device measures to address the worrisome situation.

Chief Ubosi appealed to security Stakeholders to ensure that the perpetrators of the dastardly act were brought to book.

He commended the Governor of the State, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for taking prompt action on the matter and sympathised with the Catholic Diocese of Enugu and Ugbawka Parish over the death of Reverend Father Paul Offu.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the House of Assembly towards ensuring law and order in the State.

Chief Ubosi further advised parents and guardians to ensure proper upbringing of their children and wards as well as called on the public to provide useful information to law enforcement agencies to enhance their operations.
