REPORTER:  CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Imo State Command has intercepted a truck laden with about 15,000 litres of automotive gas oil (AGO) also known as diesel suspected to be adulterated.

Addressing journalists at the Command’s headquarters in Owerri, the State Commandant of the corps, Mr. Mathew Ovye, explained that the product was bagged in specialized polythene bags and concealed with sawdust was on transit from Rivers to Enugu States.

According to the NSCDC Commandant, his men acting on a tip off intercepted the truck in Owerri and on searching the consignment observed that diesel believed to be a product of illegal refinery was contained.

Mr. Ovye said three persons had been arrested in connection with the crime and warned that the Command had stepped up intelligence to apprehend anyone involved in crude oil theft.

“The corps is not resting on its oars, the Commandant General has given us a mandate and of course this is our core mandate and we are working assiduously to ensuring that these activities are reduced and by the grace of God they are reduced to the barest minimum, after our investigation we charge them to court for prosecution,“ he said.

One of the suspects, Samuel Nnanna who hailed from Abia State, said himself and the driver of the vehicle were directed by the owner of the truck to convey the product from Port Harcourt to Enugu and pleaded for leniency.

Barely one month ago, the Imo State Command of the NSCDC intercepted seven trucks conveying automotive gas oil from Port Harcourt en route Abuja, Anambra and Niger States.
