BILL SEEKING ESTABLISHMENT OF MULTI CAMPUSES OF ESUT PASSED

The Enugu State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking the establishment of multi campuses by the State University of Science and Technology, ESUT.

This followed accelerated consideration of an Executive Bill presented by the Leader of the House, Chief Ikechukwu Ezugwu on the floor of the House.

History has it that the State owned University, ESUT had since inception operated a Multi Campus system with some of its faculties located in Enugu North Senatorial Zone.

In 2015, the House of Assembly amended the law establishing ESUT thereby giving it a mono campus structure.

It was in this light that some stakeholders in education sector advocated the need to reverse the act as there was no justification for such decision.

The bill generated arguments in view of the huge logistics associated with the reversion.

Leading the debate, the Leader of the house, Chief Ikechukwu Ezugwu maintained that the need became necessary in order to bring education closer to the people and also restore the original law establishing the University.

Some members who spoke on the debate Dr Emeka Ogbuabor, Chief Erochukwu Ugwueze, Mr Johnbull Nwagu and Chief Paul Nnajiofor in their separate speeches described it as a welcome development.

The speaker of the house, Chief Edward Ubosi commended members for giving the bill the desired attention, noting that the move was for the good of the State.

The House had earlier suspended order 42 of its standing rule to enable it to give the bill accelerated consideration.

The House also passed a bill authorizing appropriation of the sum of seventy billion, one hundred and eighty five million naira for capital and recurrent expenditure.
