AMENDMENT OF TETFUND LAW TO INCLUDE FUNDING OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES ADVOCATED

Federal and State Governments have been charged to uplift the standard of public libraries in the country to enhance quality of learning.

The President Nigerian Library Association, Dr. UmunnaOpara made the call at a forum to mark this year’s “World Book and Copyright Day” celebration in Owerri.

He noted that the poor state of infrastructure and unavailability of books in public libraries posed threats to intellectual growth especially among youths.

Dr. Opara advocated the amendment of Tertiary Education Trustfund Law, TETFUND to include funding of public libraries to cater the interest of the growing number of students in tertiary schools.

A Professor of Library Studies with the Imo State University Owerri, Mr. OkeyOkoro called on youths to cultivate the habit of reading quality books which he said could only be accessed at the libraries.

He advised artistes and the academia to respect copyright laws at all times by giving credit to their sources.

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri West, Dr. Michael Arimanwa said the institution had taken measures to ensure full enforcement of copyright laws to check incidences of plagiarism among members of staff seeking promotion in the Institution.

The event was attended by members of the academia, authors, media professionals and students of the Polytechnic.
