ABIA WORKERS TO FG: WE ARE PROTESTING AGAINST UNFAVORABLE GOVT POLICIES

The Organized Labour, made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have joined its counterparts nationwide to stage a peaceful protest over some federal government policies they described as unfavorable to Nigerian workers.

Addressing its members in Umuahia, the Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress, Abia State, Comrade Paschal Nweke, said the union was protesting the recent hike in petroleum pump prce, increase in schools fees and electricity tariff as well as value added taxes (VAT).

Also, the Chairman, TUC in the state, Comrade Ihechi Enogwe, noted that the recent hike in petroleum pump price as a result of the removal of petrol subsidy by Federal Government had brought serious hardship and high cost of living in the country.

Addressing the protesters at Government House Umuahia, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Celeb Ajagba, commended the protersters for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves during the protest.

The members of the organized labour marched along major roads in the state capital carrying placards with various inscriptions, including “We say no to oil subsidy,” “Eight thousand naira pallietive to household is unacceptable,” “Fix our refinenaries and immediate reversal of some of the government’s policies that are unfavorable to the people.”
