The wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, says her decision to support the game of Para-badminton is to forster national unity among young Nigerians and for the country to achieve a leading position in global competitive sports for the physically challenged.

Mrs. Ikpeazu stated this while playing host to the national executive of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria who paid her a courtesy visit at Government House Umuahia.

She noted that by hosting the national Para-badminton competition, it has given people with disabilities a sense of belonging in the society and encouragement to excel.

Mrs. Ikpeazu pointed out that she had in the past distributed over three hundred traditional wheelchairs and one hundred and forty artificial limbs to amputees as well as scholarships to blind students in the state to better their living.

The National President, Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Francis Orbih while applauding the efforts of Mrs. Ikpeazu in the promotion of the game of Badminton in the country, appealed that the Under 17 Zonal Badminton Championship be introduced as it would be a veritable ground to discover and harness young talents in the area.

Highlights of the event were handing over of a vehicle donated to the Badminton Federation of Nigeria by the wife of the Governor and the presentation of trouphies won by three para-badminton players from Abia State to Mrs. Ikpeazu.
