ABIA RESIDENTS HAIL MAIDUGURI—PORTHARCOURT RAIL LINE REHABILITATION

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

The Federal Government has commenced work on the removal of old railway tracks that run through Abia State.

They are to be replaced with new ones which is expected to boost railway transportation in the country.

When Radio Nigeria visited the Old Umuahia railway crossing, workers of the firm handling the project were seen removing the old tracks.

A member of staff of the firm, Mr. James Ezurike, said the removal and drainage of the old tracks were going on simultaneously from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and would soon be replaced with new ones.

Reacting to the development, residents of Umuahia, including Mr. Emmanuel Ahamefule and Victor Obinna, were happy that this would provide people with other means of transportation and reduce pressure on the roads and the risk associated with it.

They also called on the Federal Government to ensure timely completion of the project for the benefit of Nigerians.
