ABIA RESIDENTS GROAN UNDER RISING FUEL PRICE

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

The rising cost of premium motor spirit popularly known as petrol is already taking it’s toll on residents of Umuahia, the Abia State state capital.

A visit by Radio Nigeria to some filling stations in town showed that the product was sold between N1,050 and N1,100 while at NNPC stations, the price had been pegged at N885.

At the NNPC station on the Aba Road, many vehicles queued up to buy the product while many drivers waiting for the line to move were seen in groups discussing the development and other national issues.

The cost of transportation within the city had also increased by N50 or N100 depending on the route and distance while the transport fair from Umuahia to such places as Aba, Enugu and Arochukwu increased by between N100 and N500.

Some tricycle operators, who spoke with Radio Nigeria, said they were not happy to increase their fares but described it as the only option to enable them to make ends meet.
