SOME DISTRICT HOSPITALS IN ENUGU STATE TO BE UPGRADED

The Enugu State Government says plans are on to upgrade Polly Clinic Asata District and Udi District Hospitals to standard hospitals.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Greg Nnaji stated this while briefing Journalists in the company of some other commissioners after the Executive Council Meeting held at Government House, Enugu.

Mr Nnaji said that it was the Council’s decision to rehabilitate and renovate seven District Hospitals in the state located in Agbani, Udi, Igbo Eze North, Isi Uzo, Nsukka and Awgu.

Mr Nnaji further announced that the present administration had awarded contracts for the construction of six major federal roads across the state, at the sum of two point four billion naira, covering the Eha-Amufu-Nkalagu Federal Road in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.

Other roads include the extension of the Agbani-Afor road, the extension of Ituku road and the construction of Ogonogoeji Ndi Agu Akpugo road through Atavu Bailey Bridge – Afor Onovo, the construction of forty two meter span Bailey bridge and road works across river Nyama to Amechi, linking Umuogo and Umuagba Amechi Uno/Obinagu communities, all in Nkanu West Local Government Area.

Speaking on the Executive Council’s approval in Education Sector, the Commissioner, Professor Uche Eze said that the council in a bid to enhance the standard of learning and ensure that the basic education programme was continuously promoted in the state, approved the release of one billion naira to the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB).

This, according to him, is to enable the board to draw down another one billion naira from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Abuja.

The Commissioner explained that the essence of the approval was for the state government to continue with construction of new blocks, renovate dilapidated ones and provide the essential instruction materials that would enhance effective learning system.

Professor Eze also stated that the council approved the release of fifty million naira as a grant to the Enugu State Polytechnic Iwollo, Ezeagu to procure workshop and Laboratory equipment and other instructional materials that would enable the institutionto obtain full accreditation for all her programmes, sequel to the interim accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

On his part, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe, said that the council approved over thirty one million naira for health personnel who are corps members posted to rural health centres.

He said the approval was an incentive for the corps members.

The Commissioner for Information told newsmen that the council approved additional twenty seven million naira for the Enugu State Local Government Election Petition Tribunal, inaugurated last year to discharge its function.
