FAKE NEWS IDENTIFIED AS A WORRYING TREND IN THE COUNTRY

Dissemination of fake news has become a worrying trend in the Nigerian society, to the extent that the Federal Government now views it as a serious threat to peace as well as security of lives and property.

This propelled the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to launch a nation-wide campaign against it.

Our Correspondent interviewed some people in Anambra State on the dangers of fake news and how it can be curtailed in which One of them is the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Mr. Emma Ifesinachi.

He agreed that fake news is injurious to peaceful and harmonious co-existence.

A Political Affairs Analyst, Chief Jude Emecheta, opined that secrecy in running the affairs of government and private institutions is major reason fake news thrives in the country.

A Former Member, Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Val Ayika, noted that fake news gravely threatens the peace and progress of any society.

While contending that it is difficult to stop fake news, the people however believed that the situation can be curtailed with the cooperation of all Nigerians.

They also appealed to news merchants, particularly social media users to show patriotism in all they do and say.
