An environmental management expert, Professor Clifford Nwanna has canvassed synergy among professionals, citizens and relevant agencies to protect the environment from degradation.

Professor Nwanna who stated this in an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria, stressed the need for the society to work towards promoting sustainable environmental management.

He bemoaned certain human practices, which impacted negatively on the environment, insisting that adequate awareness would help in changing people’s attitude towards the environment.

Professor Nwanna who is the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka cautioned against dumping wastes into flood channels and water bodies, insisting that such actions helped in environmental degradation.

The environmental expert further noted that oil spillage had become a great source of water pollution, which should be professionally managed to save the aquaculture.

According to Professor Nwanna, there was also the need for more efforts at tree planting, which he said would reduce the rate of emission of poisonous gases to the environment.

He explained that trees reduced the rate of attack on the ozone layer and helped in purifying the air available for human consumption.
