MORE THAN 70 DRIVERS AND TRADERS CONVICTED IN ENUGU FOR VIOLATING TRAFFIC RULES

More than seventy drivers and traders have been convicted and fined by the Enugu State Ministry of Transport Court headed by Magistrate Alex Amalu, for violating traffic rules and obstructing roads.
A keke Driver, Mr Chukwuemeka Obiwuru was discharged and acquitted following appeal by the Senior Legal Officer of the Ministry, Mrs Chinyere Chiagha who pleaded that the tricycle was seized in error.
The court also pardoned a shoe dealer, Mr Onyebuchi Nnamani on compassionate grounds for selling shoes along the Holy Ghost Cathedral road.
In an interview, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Chief Ogbonna Idike lamented that most Government asphalted roads had been taken over by mechanics and traders.
Chief Idike while urging people to respect traffic rules explained that those who violated traffic laws and obstruct government roads do not have the interest of others at hand.
He thanked Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for setting up the taskforce to decongest the road for free flow of traffic, stressing that the team would work for the next one week.
Our Correspondent reports that some of the drivers whose cases were called up were absent at the court, while those fined between ten to fifteen thousand naira complained of unavailability of fund to offset the fine.
