FIVE FILLING STATIONS SEALED OFF IN IMO STATE FOR IRREGULARITIES

A monitoring team from the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR has sealed off five filling stations in Owerri the Imo state capital for falling short of operational guidelines.

The offences included under-dispensing of fuel, non adherence to stipulated safety measures, lack of serviceable fire extinguishers and failure to present operational license.

The Acting Zonal Operations Controller DPR Owerri, Mr. Taiwo Aguda told newsmen that the effected filling stations not only shortchanged Nigerians but engaged in acts that posed a risk to the lives of the people. He emphasized that the exercise was part of efforts to ensure compliance to laid down rules guiding the oil and gas business in the country.

The Head Health Safety of Environment, Mr. Christopher Okpara frowned on the poor sanitary condition of some of the filling stations, and warned that they would remain sealed until the owners complied with the rules.

A pump attendant in one of the affected filling stations, who did not want her name in print said the closure of the station where she worked would greatly affect her and her colleagues.

Correspondent Chinazo Ilechukwu reports that a good number of filling stations received clean bill of health for compliance to standards even as some independent marketers sold the premium motor spirit as low as one hundred and forty three naira per litre.
