CUSTOMS ZONE C CONFISCATED #182MN WORTH OF SMUGGLED GOODS IN DECEMBER

The Nigeria Customs Service has advised Nigerians not to patronize used vehicle tyres smuggled into the country by those he described as ruthless merchants.

The Comptroller Federal Operations Unit Zone ā€œCā€ Owerri, Mr. Kayode Olusemire, gave the advice while displaying goods seized by the Service within the last one month.

According to Olusemire, about five thousand used tyres concealed in containers were intercepted on Benin-Onitsha expressway while a total of three hundred and thirty-three bags of foreign rice were seized on Christmas day on Port Harcourt-Owerri Road.

Mr. Olusemire said apart from the fact that the tyres were expired, the manner at which they were squeezed to maximize space further exposed potential users to road mishaps.

Mr. Olusemire said the goods seized within the yuletide had a total duty paid value of one hundred and eighty-two million naira and warned smugglers to have a rethink as the Nigeria Customs service was determined to rid the nation of prohibited goods.

He advised Nigerians to use the window period given by the Federal Government to verify with the service if duties were paid on their vehicles and where need be pay the accurate amount to avoid the wrath of the law.

Correspondent Chinazo Ilechukwu reports that other goods confiscated by the Customs were foreign made suitcases, gallons of imported vegetable oil and cartons of toilet soap.
