ANTICIPATED FLOODING: FG ORDERS MEDICS, FOOD AND OTHER ITEMS FOR ANAMBRA COMMUNITIES

The Federal Government says it has put necessary measures in place to evacuate flood victims in coastal areas across the country .

The Acting Director General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Air Commodore Akugbe Iyamu, stated this in Ogbaru Local Government Area when he went on an assessment tour of coastal areas in Anambra State.

Anambra State is one of the states in the country that were predicted to be flooded before the end of 2019 Rainy season.

Speaking with journalists shortly after touring some waterways in Odekpe, Atani and Ogbaru, the NEMA Acting Director General, Air Commodore Iyamu, said government ordered that medics, food and none food items be immediately provided in anticipation of the flood in the areas.

He expressed regret that effects of most flood disasters across the country were felt the more as a result of the reluctance of some indigenes to move to higher grounds when they were asked to do so by relevant agencies.

He therefore urged all collaborative agencies to live up to their responsibilities in order to save lives and property as forecast agencies had put out strong warnings for people to move to safety.

In a speech, the Chairman Ogbaru Local Government Area, Mr. Arinze Awogu, described the sixteen communities that make up the council as flood prone and the worst hit during the 2018 incident, which ravaged the the state.

Mr. Awogu appealed to the Federal Government through NEMA to assist the people with all needed logistics, which included creation of additional holding centres and dredging of the River Niger.

In a remark, the State Chairman Nigeria Red Cross Society, Anambra State, Professor Emeka Katchy, commended the NEMA, South East Zone for always collaborating and coming to the rescue of emergency victims in Anambra State.

About eleven local governments in Anambra State are predicted to witness flood incident this year by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) before the end of September.
